DLW & John Tchicai: The Traveler
John Tchicai, saxophone and flute
Christopher Dell, vibraphone
Christian Lillinger, drums
Jonas Westergaard, double bass
In their very first project, Dell-Lillinger-Westergard recorded their very first release with the Afro-Danish saxophonist and flutist John Tchicai in 2010, which was released by jazzwerkstatt. Tchicai, who was born in 1936 and died in 2012, was one of the most important musicians of his generation; his roots were in the New Wave of Jazz of the sixties. He founded the New York Art Quartet and later the New York Contemporary Five with Archie Shepp and Don Cherry and recorded with Coltrane, Ayler and many others. The cross-generational project with DLW functions as a collective dedicated to intense, probing thoughtfulness. Thomas Fitterling wrote about the recordings in Rondo magazine: „Every track is a jewel.”
